of 92%o of control values. All dogs survived the experiment without evidence of renal failure. A preliminary report of this work was presented at the Conference on the Microcirculation as related to Shock, Boston University, 30 March 1967. Received for publication 19 September 1967 and in revZised form 26 October 1967. It is concluded that hemorrhagic hypotension in dogs leads to a progressive and fairly uniform rise in renal vascular resistance, without any selective hemodynamic response in the juxtamedullary circulation.

Mechanism of the redistribution of renal cortical blood flow during hemorrhagic hypotension in the dog.

Studies were performed to define the mechanisms involved in the redistribution of renal cortical blood flow to inner cortical nephrons which occurs during hemorrhagic hypotension in the dog. The radioactive microsphere method was utilized to measure regional blood flow in the renal cortex. Renal nerve stimulation decreased renal blood flow 40% but had no effect on the fractional distribution of...

Effect of retransfusion after hemorrhagic hypotension on intrarenal distribution of blood flow in dogs.

Hemorrhagic hypotension in anesthetized dogs produces a marked decrease of the cortical blood flow, whereas the medullary blood flow is well preserved. These animals were maintained at blood pressures of 50 mm Hg during a 3 hr period after which their blood pressures were restored by the reinfusion of blood or dextran, or both. In the first group of animals, the reinfusion of blood reestablishe...

Jejunal tissue oxygenation and microvascular flow motion during hemorrhage and resuscitation.

The relationship between flow motion and tissue oxygenation was investigated during hemorrhage/retransfusion with and without dopamine in 14 pigs. During 45% bleed, jejunal microvascular hemoglobin O(2) saturation (HBjO(2)) and mucosal tissue Po(2) (Po(2)muc) were recorded in seven control and seven dopamine-treated animals. Mean arterial pressure and systemic O(2) delivery decreased during hem...

Systemic and microcirculatory effects of blood transfusion in experimental hemorrhagic shock

BACKGROUND The microvascular reperfusion injury after retransfusion has not been completely characterized. Specifically, the question of heterogeneity among different microvascular beds needs to be addressed. In addition, the identification of anaerobic metabolism is elusive. The venoarterial PCO2 to arteriovenous oxygen content difference ratio (Pv-aCO2/Ca-vO2) might be a surrogate for respira...

The coherence of macrocirculation, microcirculation, and tissue metabolic response during nontraumatic hemorrhagic shock in swine

Hemorrhagic shock is clinically observed as changes in macrocirculatory indices, while its main pathological constituent is cellular asphyxia due to microcirculatory alterations. The coherence between macro- and microcirculatory changes in different shock states has been questioned. This also applies to the hemorrhagic shock. Most studies, as well as clinical situations, of hemorrhagic shock in...
